Now Foods, a family-owned company founded in 1968, produces a variety of healthy products. The Xyli White line of toothpastes is especially popular among Russian consumers. Remedies from personally are suitable for both adults and children after two years.

Of course, the name of the toothpaste when translated into Russian sounds somewhat strange, but this does not in any way affect the quality of the product.

Please note that Now Foods products are free of fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate and gluten. The main ingredient of all pastes is natural xylitol (birch sugar), the concentration of which reaches 25% of the total volume - this is more than in any other paste.

In addition to xylitol, Xyli White toothpaste also contains other components of exclusively natural origin:

  • peppermint extract freshens breath for a long time;

The oral hygiene product industry is expanding every day as the emergence of new technologies forces people to focus on a specific manufacturer. In this regard, the development of gel toothpastes, which are designed for a narrow target segment - toothpastes for children and toothpastes for sensitive teeth, is very promising.

Why is this type of toothpaste popular?

Today, such pastes have gained great popularity among consumers. The secret of such popularity is associated with the specific properties that gel toothpastes have. First of all, it is necessary to note the structure of such toothpastes. By gel structure we mean a structured disperse system with an aqueous medium that has plasticity and elasticity. Elements of the structural spatial network of the gel can be formed using swollen macromolecular coils, or particles of a liquid or solid dispersed phase.

Photos of gel toothpastes are presented in the article.

What are gelling agents in toothpastes?

Special structure Such pastes are given special gelling agents, or hydrocolloids, which can be:

  • cellulose compounds (hydroxyethylcellulose, ;
  • seaweed components (carrageenans, sodium alginate);
  • gum (guar, xanthan, carob);
  • various starch derivatives (sodium carboxymethyl starch, dextran);
  • pectins.

Due to the introduction of gelling agents, the consistency and structure of toothpastes is significantly improved, their cleansing effect is enhanced, since a stable fine foam is formed, independent of the chemical nature of the surface-active element used.

Gel toothpastes are easily dispersed in water and also promote the rapid release of active ingredients, especially anti-inflammatory additives and fluoride compounds, accelerating the therapeutic and preventative effects of the toothpaste. Thanks to the gel network structure, the active ingredients are well retained in the paste without interacting with each other, which significantly expands the possibilities for producing new pastes and introducing a large number of different elements into their content. Another important property of gel toothpastes is their transparency.

Properties of these toothpastes

Today there are many varieties of gel toothpastes on the market, but how does this type of hygiene product differ from others? Firstly, such pastes are transparent, and secondly, they do not contain calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide and other abrasive substances that severely scratch the enamel of sensitive teeth, which has an extremely negative effect on baby teeth. Separately, it is necessary to highlight the fact that, as a rule, artificial dyes are not added to gel toothpastes, which negatively affect the walls of the digestive organs and tooth enamel.

That's why children's gel toothpastes are so popular.

Features of choosing a toothpaste for brushing teeth

What should you pay attention to when choosing a gel paste? Firstly, this is age:

  • up to 4 years (no fluoride and minimal amount of abrasive substances, the paste should be as safe as possible in case of accidental swallowing);
  • from 4 to 8 years (during this period there is an active change of teeth, inflammatory processes can occur in the mouth, which is why the content of the paste components is important, ensuring the prevention of caries development and having a bactericidal effect);
  • from 8 to 14 years (during this period, almost all teeth are molars, so the content of abrasive components and fluoride is allowed, the composition of the paste is close to that of pastes for adults).

Secondly, the content of the hygiene product:

  • the presence of fluorine (this is a rather toxic element, so its use in gel pastes is a controversial issue due to the fact that fluoride begins to be actively absorbed already in the oral cavity);
  • abrasive substances (elements such as calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate aggressively affect the enamel structure, and titanium dioxide and silicon dioxide are more preferable in this case);
  • foaming agents (pay attention that these pastes do not contain such a toxic substance as sodium lauryl sulfate, however, gelling agents have a high foaming ability);
  • binding components (resins of trees, plants and algae).

Not only new compositions are being developed, but also paste consistencies.

A lot of attention has been attracted to gel toothpastes, because they are great for children and people with.

Teeth cleaning gels: what’s special about them

The composition of gel pastes includes hydrocolloids and gelling agents.

These substances may be:

  • seaweed components;
  • pectins;
  • industrial starches;
  • cellulose compounds.

The consistency and structure are significantly influenced by gelling agents. This improves the ability to clean teeth. A fine foam that does not have negative chemical compounds is also formed. In an aqueous environment, gel toothpaste has the ability to disperse. This facilitates the rapid release of elements. This is especially important for the anti-inflammatory elements contained in the paste.

Gel fiber is able to retain beneficial elements, preventing them from interacting with each other. This positive feature allows manufacturers to create new pastes with the addition of various compounds that have a positive effect on dental health. An important feature of gel toothpaste is transparency. The photo shows the paste in the form of a gel.

The main properties of gel pastes:

  • transparency;
  • the absence of popular chemical elements, for example, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, which scratch the enamel and negatively affect baby teeth;
  • no artificial dyes, so there is no negative effect on digestion and enamel structure.

The absence of the above chemical elements has a positive effect on the enamel.

Thanks to the natural pigments and gel structure of the paste, the enamel is not scratched and there are no blood stains left on the gums. If a dye is added to the gel paste, it is of natural origin. Because of this, the gel hygiene product is widely popular and in demand in the market.

How to make a choice that won't disappoint

When purchasing gel pastes, there are nuances that you definitely need to pay attention to.

Age is of great importance, since different pastes with a unique composition are intended for different age categories. The main feature is safety. If the paste is swallowed, there is a high probability of poisoning, so manufacturers first pay attention to this. They create an environmentally friendly product that does not contain harmful chemicals.

Features of choosing gel toothpastes for children:

  1. Up to 4 years of age It is advisable to limit gel toothpastes.
  2. from 4 to 8 years old– the presence of anti-inflammatory substances is important in the composition. This is explained by the fact that during this period it is especially important to take care of your gums due to... In addition, such substances have properties.
  3. From 8 to 14 years old the presence of fluorine or abrasive substances can be allowed in pastes. This composition is already similar to adult hygiene products.

The hygiene product contained in the paste is of great importance.

  1. . This element is toxic, so its use in gel products for teeth is a point that causes a lot of controversy. The fact is that fluoride begins to be actively absorbed already in the oral cavity.
  2. Foaming agent. It is important that the pastes do not contain sodium lauryl sulfate (it is toxic).
  3. substances. For example, calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate have a bad effect on the enamel structure.

When choosing, the main thing is the absence of toxic substances.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantage of gel paste, compared to other products, is its structure. Thanks to the structured disperse system, when interacting with water, the composition has elasticity and plasticity. Macromolecular coils can swell, creating a network.

The main advantages and disadvantages are related to application. Pastes do not irritate the mucous membranes and do not scratch the gums. Thanks to their mild effect, they are beneficial for children's teeth.

The main disadvantage of gel paste is the inability to fight deposits that form on the teeth, so adults most often choose conventional dental products.

Toothpaste is a necessary item in the home of every civilized person. Using toothpaste is essential to prevent tooth decay, plaque, and gum disease. The right choice of product is the key to a beautiful smile and healthy teeth until old age! These products are available in a wide range on the market. How do you know which toothpaste is best? To do this, you need to become more familiar with the types and purposes of this hygiene product.

Dental mixtures fall into two main categories:

  • hygienic;
  • medicinal.

The hygienic product serves to freshen breath and also prevents the formation of plaque on the teeth. Hygienic mixtures do not have a pronounced therapeutic effect, and therefore they practically lack useful microelements.

The basis of hygienic pastes are abrasive particles that remove plaque, as well as foaming substances. The composition also includes flavorings and flavoring additives.

Medicinal – for the treatment of the oral cavity

Medicinal toothpastes perform more serious tasks: they not only deodorize the oral cavity, but also treat certain problems.

Depending on the intended purpose, the treatment category is divided, in turn, into the following types:

  • Toothpaste for caries. This product removes plaque on teeth, thereby preventing tooth decay. Basically, this product contains fluoride, which strengthens tooth tissue. But there are toothpastes without fluoride - with calcium and other useful additives.
  • Toothpaste for gums– treats periodontal disease and eliminates bleeding. Periodontal disease is the destruction of the gums, which leads to partial or complete loss of teeth. The first signs of this disease are bleeding gums. To stop the development of the disease at an early stage, you must immediately purchase the necessary medicinal pastes that contain antimicrobial components: chlorophyll, herbal extracts.
  • Toothpaste for sensitive teeth. It does not contain large particles that damage delicate enamel. The product contains potassium and strontium salts, which eliminate sensitivity.
  • Whitening toothpaste. There are two methods of whitening: by removing plaque on teeth using large abrasives and various enzymes; or by bleaching yellows with peroxide. In any case, bleaching agents should not be used every day so as not to damage the enamel.
  • Toothpaste for tartar removal. This dental mixture contains sorbents that absorb microparticles of food, as well as pathogenic bacteria, thereby preventing plaque on the teeth.
  • Product made from natural ingredients contains exclusively extracts from medicinal herbs. Chalk is used as abrasive particles. However, such mixtures must be purchased only from well-known manufacturers, since you can often purchase counterfeits of natural cosmetics.
  • Children's toothpaste created with minimal addition of chemical elements so as not to damage delicate enamel.

For cleaning teeth, there is another product that has been popular since the times of the USSR - tooth powder.

According to dentists, the powder consists of 99% natural substances and does a better job of whitening. The powder does not contain any flavoring additives or fragrances. Its only drawback is that it falls apart. Therefore, for long trips it is better to take a tube of paste with you.

Children's - maximum calcium minimum fluoride

Doctors are very careful when choosing toothpaste for children. After all, kids really love to eat aromatic fruit-flavored pasta. Therefore, in order to avoid various types of poisoning of the baby, parents need to carefully study the composition of the dental product. It is best to purchase such products at a pharmacy.

Toothpaste with calcium is designed specifically for children. Indeed, at the age of 4 to 8 years, the permissible level of fluoride content in children's products should not exceed 1%. It is also undesirable to contain triclosan, which kills not only harmful, but also beneficial microflora.

The product should not contain abrasive particles so as not to damage the enamel that has not yet formed.

Black – for teeth whitening

The use of black toothpaste, as strange as it may sound, is necessary for teeth whitening. This know-how appeared relatively recently and was brought to our country from the East.

The base of the black paste is charcoal, which is an excellent absorbent.

In addition, this product contains the following components:

  • extracts of blue berries (juniper, blueberry);
  • coniferous tree resins;
  • essential oils from guava, muraya, mint and cloves;
  • extracts of medicinal herbs;
  • natural antiseptic borneol.

In addition to the whitening effect, this mixture perfectly freshens breath and also has an anti-inflammatory effect.

The best whitening toothpaste in black “Kobayashi”, made in Japan. In addition to charcoal, this product contains a large amount of medicinal herbs. Mint is a good breath freshener, and charcoal microparticles perfectly absorb food particles, preventing caries and tartar.

The product disinfects the oral cavity so well that fresh breath lasts throughout the day.

Thai abrasive toothpaste cleans the mouth well even in the most difficult to reach places. However, you should not use it every day so as not to wear off your tooth enamel. Also, this mixture should not be used by people with sensitive teeth.

The domestic mixture “Black Night” appeared on the market recently, but has already firmly established its position. It contains microparticles from mussel shells, which are rich in useful microelements. Silicon dioxide cleanses the oral cavity, and silver ions have an antimicrobial effect.

Gel - does not damage enamel

Nowadays, gel-based enamel toothpaste is becoming increasingly popular. It does not contain microparticles, which with their sharp edges can damage the surface of the teeth. Along with this, the gentle action of the gel has a cleansing and antimicrobial effect.

Sensitive toothpaste should contain extracts of the following plants:

  • sage;
  • chamomile;
  • oak bark;
  • propolis.

These substances are natural antiseptics: they remove germs and restore gums.

Which toothpaste is the best? Everyone should be able to choose the best option for themselves, taking into account the characteristics of their teeth and the presence of certain problems.

Toothpastes rating

  • Lacalut;
  • Blend-a-med;
  • Colgate;
  • Pepsodent;
  • Splat;
  • Aquafresh;
  • Silca;
  • President.

This list includes products that are sold in Russia and the CIS countries, and are also affordable to the average buyer.

  • microelements and vitamins;
  • natural antibiotics (chlorhexine and triclosan);
  • calcium;
  • fluorine;
  • salts of other elements;
  • enzymes that remove plaque.

What do stripes on toothpaste mean?

Many people, when buying a tube of toothpaste, don't even think about the stripes that are pictured there. After all, if you look closely, these products are marked with tags of different colors. What do they mean?

It turns out that the color of the strip indicates the composition of the mixture and the percentage of natural substances in it.

Stripes on toothpaste tubes:

  1. Black– 100% chemical composition. This mixture increases the manifestation of periodontal disease and bleeding gums. Also, a black stripe may indicate high abrasiveness, so it should not be used for sensitive teeth.
  2. Blue- 80% chemicals, and only 20% natural ingredients. This paste is less abrasive, but can be used no more than 2 times a week.
  3. Red– 50%: 50% chemicals and natural products.
  4. Green– 100% natural raw materials. The paste is made only from environmentally friendly substances. You can brush your teeth with this product every day, morning and evening, without fear of consequences!

When buying a tube, you need to look not only at the strips, but also carefully read its composition. Knowing the harmful and beneficial substances, it is much easier to navigate the purchase.

Beneficial properties - with and without fluorine

The main element of this mixture is fluorine. Toothpaste with fluoride helps fight tooth decay and also helps strengthen enamel.

The benefit of toothpaste with fluoride is that its ions, which settle on the surface of the tooth, combine with calcium ions and other minerals, thereby restoring the integrity of the tooth coating. All cracks are “covered” with a dense mineral film – fluorapatite. This substance is similar in composition to natural tooth enamel.

Thus, fluoride makes teeth less sensitive and protects them from premature destruction. In dental practice, it is most often not pure fluorine that is used, but its compounds with tin, sodium, and aluminum. Sodium fluoride is a popular ingredient in tooth balms. It is even added to children's toothpaste. Despite the positive qualities of fluoride, it has its disadvantages.

The effect of fluoride toothpastes is such that with prolonged use they can cause intoxication of the body. Fluoride can cause heart, kidney and thyroid diseases.

And it is not necessary to swallow it when brushing your teeth, because fluoride is perfectly absorbed through the oral mucosa and enters the blood.

Scientists have developed an alternative to the previous remedy - toothpaste without fluoride. It is most often replaced with calcium and its compounds.

Harmful toothpaste - acceptable and harmful impurities

Scientists have determined that a person eats about 2-3 kg of pasta in his life! And the oral mucosa is capable of absorbing the contents in it in 30 seconds!

And toothpaste contains various chemicals, including harmful ones. To brush your teeth with the least damage to your health, you need to know the harmful and acceptable substances.

Allowed substances:

  • silicon oxide;
  • xylitol;
  • sorbitol;
  • zinc citrate;
  • sodium benzoate;
  • potassium sorbate;
  • sodium silicate.

Harmful impurities:

  • sodium carboxymethylcellulose - stabilizer;
  • saccharin is a synthetic sweetener;
  • titanium dioxide – clarifier;
  • cocamidopropyl betaine – foaming agent;
  • triclosan;
  • chlorhexine.

An ideal product should consist of natural ingredients. The presence of 1-2 harmful impurities in it is acceptable. It is necessary to carefully read the composition on the tube so as not to harm the body.

Natural toothpaste: components and substances

An effective toothpaste that does not cause harm to the body should consist of the following ingredients:

  • kaolin;
  • baking soda;
  • calcium carbonate;
  • silicon;
  • sea salt;
  • essential oils;
  • coconut milk;
  • herbal extracts.

Want something interesting?

The following substances are strictly prohibited in natural remedies:

  • fluorine;
  • triclosan;
  • titanium dioxide;
  • aluminum lactate;
  • saccharin;
  • decyl glucoside.

Acceptable ingredients in minimum doses:

  • zinc citrate;
  • sodium benzoate;
  • glycerol;
  • potassium sorbate;
  • sorbitol.

The natural product is similar in composition to tooth powder, in which the main ingredient is calcium carbonate - chalk.

The powder does not contain any taste impurities, various fragrances and flavors. It does a great job of whitening, and it costs pennies!

However, powders contain large abrasive particles that can damage the enamel on sensitive teeth. Therefore, for lovers of natural remedies, the only solution is to prepare homemade toothpaste.

How to make your own toothpaste

The homemade mixture includes natural ingredients and medicinal herbs.

Herbal extracts have the following effect:

  • cloves – can relieve toothache;
  • sage – eliminates bleeding;
  • rosemary – increases blood flow to the gums;
  • thyme – kills bacteria;
  • tea tree – eliminates caries and copes with gum inflammation;
  • mint – gives freshness to breath.

By adding several natural ingredients to herbs, you can get an excellent mixture that can replace store-bought toothpaste at a much lower cost and without side effects.

Homemade toothpaste requires the following ingredients:

  • white clay – 60 grams;
  • baking soda – 2 tablespoons;
  • Himalayan salt – 1 tablespoon;
  • crushed turmeric – 1 tablespoon;
  • mint, orange, green tea oils - 2-3 drops of each.

All components can be purchased at any cosmetic store and pharmacy. There is no need to soak or steam anything. It is enough to mix all the components in the required proportions, and then pour the finished mixture into a clean cream box, for example.

Teeth whitening toothpaste requires the following ingredients:

  • sea salt – 0.5 teaspoon;
  • baking soda – 2 teaspoons;
  • myrrh powder - 0.5 teaspoon.
  • kaolin – 0.5 teaspoon;
  • glycerin – 2 teaspoons.
  • rosemary essential oil – 10 drops.

You can replace the last component with lavender, mint, and orange oil.

In order for the homemade product to bring only benefits, you must follow these recommendations:

  1. If you cannot brush your teeth, you should rinse them with plain water.
  2. After snacks, you can use a mouthwash, or add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to a glass of water.
  3. After eating fruit, you should not brush your teeth immediately. The enamel must first recover from fruit acids.
  4. It is better to add baking soda separately to the toothbrush, and not to the total mass. The fact is that soda can be used no more than 2 times a week so as not to damage the enamel.
  5. To enhance the whitening effect, you should rinse your mouth with salt water.
  6. Citric acid has an excellent whitening effect. To rinse your mouth, just add 10 drops of lemon juice to a glass of water. However, you should not brush your teeth for an hour afterwards.
  7. A good alternative to brushing your teeth is chewing cloves.

It should be noted that even the best toothpaste will not whiten teeth or heal gums if you do not maintain regular oral hygiene and do not follow basic rules. This means that you should quit smoking, reduce your coffee intake, eat nutritiously, and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Segmented marketing of the oral hygiene industry is increasingly expanding as new technologies force manufacturers to target specific consumers. In this regard, the most promising developments are new gel toothpastes designed for a narrow target segment - children's toothpastes and toothpastes for sensitive teeth.

Today, gel pastes are becoming increasingly popular among consumers. The secret of this popularity is associated with the special properties that gel toothpastes have.
First of all, the gel structure of toothpastes should be noted. By gel structure we mean a structured disperse system with an aqueous medium, which has elasticity and plasticity. Elements of the spatial structural network of the gel can be formed by swollen macromolecular coils, or particles of solid or liquid dispersed phase.

The gel structure of toothpastes is given by gelling agents, or hydrocolloids, which can be: cellulose compounds (sodium carboxymethylcellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose), seaweed products (sodium alginate, carrageenans), gums (xanthan, guar, carob), various starch derivatives (dextran, sodium carboxymethyl starch), pectins. Due to the introduction of gelling agents, the structure and consistency of toothpastes improves, their cleansing effect increases, since a fine, stable foam is formed, which does not depend on the chemical nature of the surfactant used.

Toothpastes containing gelling agents are easily dispersed in water, promoting the rapid release of active ingredients, especially fluoride compounds and anti-inflammatory additives, thus accelerating the therapeutic and prophylactic effect of the paste. Thanks to the mesh gel structure, the active ingredients are retained in the toothpaste without interacting with each other, which significantly expands the possibilities for creating new toothpastes and introducing a greater variety of ingredients into their composition.
Another important property of gel toothpastes is their transparency.
Since toothpaste is a polydisperse system, in order to achieve transparency it is necessary to balance the refractive index of the dispersed medium (abrasive ingredient) and the dispersed phase (aqueous solution of the moisturizing ingredient (glycerin, sorbitol, polyethylene glycol)). Silicon dioxide is the only ingredient capable of forming clear pastes. Among the most well-known components for silica-based toothpastes is Sorbosil produced by Ineos.

Table 1 shows the characteristics of ingredients under the Sorbosil brand.

As can be seen from Table 1, toothpastes can use silica-based ingredients with various functional properties: controlled abrasiveness (abrasive ingredients with different RDA values), improved consumer properties (visual cleansing ability markers), controlled viscosity (rheology regulators). ).

Silicon dioxide-based products, due to their low refractive index (RI = 1.435 - 1.460), make it possible, by controlling the humectant/water ratio in formulations, to correlate the RI of this system with the RI of silicon dioxide and obtain absolutely transparent gels with different RDA values.

As follows from Fig. 1, the higher the transmittance of silicon dioxide, the more transparent the toothpaste. Using Sorbosil AC 77 or Sorbosil AC 35 with medium abrasiveness, you can achieve good transparency at a high level of refraction, which, in turn, allows you to create an economical paste with a higher water content and a low percentage of abrasive input. Another possibility is to include large quantities of Sorbosil AC 39 while maintaining good optical properties.
Ineos has developed a test for determining the transparency of toothpastes, shown in Figure 2. To assess transparency, an alphanumeric table is provided that is used to measure transparency by determining the smallest readable line through 10mm of toothpaste.

Table 2 suggests three formulations of transparent toothpastes with different levels of abrasiveness. For example, a silica-based formula with a medium level of abrasiveness can be used to produce toothpaste for a wide range of consumers, while silica-based formulations with a low abrasiveness level are intended primarily for children and consumers with increased tooth sensitivity. In addition, in order to improve the consumer properties of the paste, silicon dioxide microgranules (Sorbosil BFG 10, 50-54), which have the so-called “crunching effect,” were introduced into the toothpaste formulations. The purpose of this effect is to strengthen the consumer’s mind about the high effectiveness of toothpaste, since the population still has a stereotype about the insufficient cleansing ability of gel pastes. Many foreign manufacturers of toothpastes use similar products, in particular, Procter & Gamble, USA, “Blend-a-med” toothpaste; Colgate-Palmolive, USA, Colgate toothpaste.

By combining basic silica-based abrasive ingredients with cleaning power enhancers Sorbosil AC 33, 43 and silica microgranules (Sorbosil BFG 10, 50-54), it is possible to obtain toothpastes with improved consumer properties: a controlled level of abrasiveness, high cleaning effect and transparency.
